Integrating ESG into our strategy and business

In 2022, we launched a comprehensive ESG strategy as a core part of our integrator strategy. As our customers rethink and rewire their logistics, they are turning to Maersk to help ensure their supply chains are sustainable and responsibly run. Supply chains that improve life for all by integrating the world.

We do this though three core commitments, each supported by robust governance, transparent reporting and passionate experts:

Environment
We take leadership in the decarbonisation of logistics
Social
We will ensure that our people thrive at work by providing a safe and inspiring workplace
Governance

We operate based on responsible business practices

Doubling down on decarbonisation

The transition to green fuels is key to the decarbonisation of our Ocean business. In 2022 we doubled down by ordering additional large ocean-going container vessels that can run on green methanol. Securing a supply of green fuels for these vessels is also a key part of the challenge. In 2022 we forged new strategic partnerships to lay the groundwork for scaling up green fuel production – a promising achievement considering how new the industry is.

Incentivising production and scale-up to contribute to the portfolio of ~5 million tonnes of green methanol by 2030

Decarbonising inland logistics – from the first mile to the last

Switching from fossil fuels to electricity is a key lever for decarbonising our landside logistics including trucks, rail and barges as well as warehouses and distribution centres.

We place dedicated focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and responsible energy and water use in the warehouses and distribution centres in our network.

A People strategy with DE&I at its core

We strive to create inclusive workplaces with diversity of thought, culture, sexual orientation and gender. In 2022, we prioritised improving gender diversity through our People processes, from recruitment and onboarding to retention and leadership development.

We also focused on ensuring equity in recruiting processes for male-dominated working environments, including warehouses, trucking, and at sea where women are significantly underrepresented.

Responsible business practices – nurturing a speak up culture

In 2022 we updated our Code of Conduct, which guides employees in their daily interactions with colleagues, customers, partners and communities, in line with our Purpose and ESG strategy.

The update was accompanied by a ‘Speak Up’ campaign to foster the creation of a safe and secure environment where people feel empowered to raise compliance issues and ask questions.

Supporting our employees’ right to be heard

Our ‘speak up’ up culture encourages our employees to voice concerns. Our zero-tolerance, non-retaliation policy is enshrined in the Maersk Code of Conduct.
