Agritrade 2024, the biggest agricultural trade event in Guatemala, took place this March and provided a robust platform for innovation, exchange of knowledge and networking. The event was marked on the calendar for sector leaders, policymakers, shippers, consumers, and innovators to discuss the future of global agriculture. As one of the main logistics providers for all the exports in Guatemala and the Central American region, Maersk sponsored the event, and our logistics experts were available to talk about how agribusinesses could benefit from supply chain innovation.

About Agritrade

A significant event in the agricultural industry, Agritrade serves as the premier platform for promoting agribusiness in the Central American region. Organized by the Agricultural Sector of the Guatemalan Exporters Association AGEXPORT, this expo takes place every two years and brings together international buyers and key exporters of fresh and processed products from Latin America. With over 130 international buyers engaging with more than 200 exhibitors, the event plays a role in driving economic growth and fostering international trade.

Empowering Central America trades

The event took place in Antigua, Guatemala, a picturesque city surrounded by volcanoes. The perfect scenery for a day of conferences followed by two days of a dynamic tradeshow. During the first part of the event, Maersk took the main stage with a conference about the current situation of shipping lines and cold chain trends in Central America. Alejandro Calito, Cold Chain Sales Representative; Alex Lopez, Head of Market; and Daniel Guillen, Area Manager for Integrated Sales of Cold Chain, highlighted the critical role of logistics in ensuring the seamless movement of agricultural goods across borders.

This year's event provided an arena for exhibitors and buyers to showcase a diverse array of fresh and processed products from Latin America, with an estimated USD 25 million in projected agribusiness transactions for Guatemala.

Luis Teo, President of the organising committee of Agritrade, emphasized the significant growth of the agricultural sector, with exports reaching a value of more than USD 4 billion by the end of 2023. Looking ahead, he explained how there was a projected potential in the agro-negotiations in the medium term, showcasing the industry's resilience and potential for continued expansion.

Maersk, as the official sponsor for the event, had a busy stand where we shared and exchanged knowledge, supporting the agribusiness community and facilitating global trade.

One of our customers, with whom we had meetings at the Maersk booth, described their partnership with Maersk as:

Maersk is about human interaction and finding solutions, which has helped us grow our business and enter new markets.

Mario Yarzebski, General Manager, Palo Blanco

During the event and the meetings held at the Maersk booth, the representatives highlighted their support for export producers by offering faster and more frequent routes to the United States. They also explained how technology serves as the foundation for optimising our clients’ logistics, utilising traceability tools.

We assist our clients across their land, air and sea supply chains. That’s why we gather on this platform today to collaboratively find solutions and expand into different markets.

Daniel Guillen, Area Manager for Integrated Sales of Cold Chain, Maersk Central America

Agritrade 2024 highlighted the potential of Latin America's agricultural sector, and Maersk showcased innovation, fostered collaborations, and paved the way for sustainable growth in agricultural trade and development.
