Maersk is taking another significant step to deliver true end-to-end integrated logistics as we announce our intent to acquire Pilot Freight Services. With this addition, we will be able to provide our customers with premium big and bulky last mile delivery services, enhanced middle mile capacity, and additional cross border Mexico/Canada - US solutions that keep pace with evolving markets. This will allow for a unique customer experience by seamlessly connecting key parts of your supply chain with ease, speed, scale and deep subject matter expertise, ultimately bringing you closer to your end-consumers.
Formed in 1970, Pilot is a full-service transportation and logistics provider with 87 locations throughout North America and deep B2C expertise in retail, home furnishing and consumer electronics. The combined Pilot and Maersk scale will offer customers over 150 facilities in the U.S., including distribution centers, hubs and stations. This landside logistics’ depth combined with Maersk’s international network will create significant new capabilities.
Pilot specializes in the big and bulky freight segment for B2C and B2B distribution models, which includes factory-to-couch logistics for heavy and hard to handle goods. Adding their services to our offering will allow customers to successfully add white glove last mile delivery components to their supply chain. With the high end-consumer demand currently at play in the market, this will not only reduce unnecessary handovers but also allow for premium and speedy delivery services to ensure that your brand values are intact for the ever-critical customer delivery experience.
In addition, Pilot’s acquisition of American Linehaul Corporation in July 2021 was instrumental in securing leading market expertise in LTL expedited capabilities and middle mile. Pairing this with Maersk’s already extensive landside offering will allow our customers to optimize the crucial middle mile with greater visibility, efficiency, and cost effectiveness across extensive and high-quality networks for both parcel and bulk. This includes Maersk’s support to the fast-paced expansion of cross-border logistics.
Our customers have asked us to support their domestic delivery ambitions by investing in middle and last mile service models. This acquisition will add important expertise and supply chain capacity to customers who faced capacity constraints and multiple handoffs with providers in that space. We can in time help them install stronger, more integrated supply chains with better visibility and consumer experience outcomes. We look forward to welcoming the Pilot Team aboard in our customer journey.
We look forward to sharing more details on our expanded capabilities soon. The acquisition is subject to regulatory review and approval. Closing of the transaction is expected in the second quarter of 2022. Both companies will operate as independent businesses until that time.
