A promising beginning

Disruptions are a constant in the logistics business. To improve ocean reliability Maersk and Hapag Lloyd have entered into a collaboration to develop a solution – The Network of the Future.

On 6th November we revealed our plans to tackle the challenges of ocean transport. Our expert panelists comprised of Anne-Sophie Zerlang Karlsen (Head of APA Operations TbM), and Bhavan Vempati (Head of Asia Market, Ocean Products), gave in-depth details into our vision, strategy and implementation of Maersk Network of the Future insights.

Now to solve the problem, we simply cannot do the same things harder. Going faster or adding more ships to the network will be futile and it requires us to come up with a different level of thinking, a different concept to truly have a workable solution.

Let’s talk key features

If you missed the hour-and-a-half webinar, or need a refresher on how the Network of the Future aims to transform the way you ship goods reliably - here are the key takeaways of what was a very interesting and insightful session:

Scope of the Network

As a start, the Network of the Future will concentrate on East-West trade lines. This will cover trade routes from Asia to North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Not to mention Europe to the US as well.

Cape of Good Hope or Suez Canal?

The network was designed to be prepared to transport cargo, irrespective of which path customers would want to go with. However, our concern for your customer’s cargo and our seafarer’s safety has encouraged us to solely rely on routing goods through the Cape of Good Hope. 350 ships capable of carrying 4,000,000 TUs will ensure reliability and safety.

The transshipment hubs with what we call shuttles, are going to be providing us a much higher degree of agility in our operation.

Hub and Spoke Model

Hub and spoke model

The new network will reduce the number of stopovers at ports and rely on transshipment hubs and shuttle services to move goods more reliably. This will result in leaner loops, which means fewer delays at congested mainline ports. To this end, Maersk has invested more than 3 billion over the last 3 years into getting the network ready to take on global demand.

More control with own assets

Moving goods globally will rely on own controlled assets. More port of calls at APM terminals will give more control over cargo journeys to execute contingency plans effectively if needed. Also, mainliners in the Network of the Future will be solely operated by Maersk or Hapag Lloyd, each concentrating on particular routes, to execute decisions faster and optimise coordination.
The Network of the Future will open for bookings in December 2024 and will officially begin its services in February 2025. With a combination of APM terminals, transshipment hubs, and shuttle services that follow the hub and spoke model, and our expert personnel in 180 countries across the world – the aim is to take ocean reliability from 50% to 90% for your customers.
