In the fast-changing world of global logistics, it is essential to ensure that large projects succeed in complex situations. Latin America is no different. The region’s unique geography, regulatory environment, varied infrastructure, and constant volatility present both opportunities and challenges for businesses needing customised logistics solutions. To learn more about this vital part of the supply chain, we interviewed Roberto Fernaine, Regional Head of Maersk Project Logistics in Latin America. In this article, he discusses the complexities of project logistics and how Maersk is preparing to address them.
The visionary leader: Roberto Fernaine
With over 30 years of experience in the logistics sector, Roberto Fernaine stands out as a seasoned leader, particularly in project logistics in Latin America, where he has dedicated more than 20 years. His expertise spans continents, having worked in Africa, Europe, and North America, but Latin America holds a special place in his career because he has managed complex projects in nearly every country in the region and in high seas offshore.. His extensive understanding of the local market, coupled with Maersk's worldwide network, makes him a key figure in shaping the future of project logistics in Latin America.
Understanding project logistics
So, what is project logistics and how does it differ from traditional logistics services? According to Roberto, project logistics is like "solving a puzzle." It involves comprehending all the components and figuring out how they fit together to ensure smooth operations. Unlike regular logistics, which often focuses on routine or transactional transportation, project logistics demands end-to-end, “tailor-made” solutions to tackle specific challenges such as moving oversized cargo, managing time-critical deliveries, and coordinating multi-party involvement which can sometimes last for years in a single project.
We manage everything from chartering vessels to using our in-house engineering and 3D technology for simulations. This ensures that each project is successfully delivered, regardless of its scale or complexity. This comprehensive approach distinguishes Maersk, making us not just a logistics provider, but a partner in every project’s success.
Overcoming regional challenges
Latin America is well-known for its diverse logistical challenges, and this is especially true for project logistics. From bureaucratic obstacles to infrastructure limitations, the region presents significant hurdles that can delay or complicate project execution. "Bureaucracy is one of the biggest challenges," Roberto points out. Developing a project in Latin America often involves navigating a complex web of permits, studies, and documentation, which can lead to bottlenecks.
Moreover, the region's infrastructure can be underdeveloped in certain areas, with ports and airports not always equipped to handle larger vessels or heavy cargo.
Roberto also mentions that local communities can sometimes present challenges, as projects often need to work through areas where cooperation with local businesses is crucial. The volatility of local regulations and the economic climate adds another layer of difficulty, making it essential for Maersk to stay adaptive and responsive.
How does Maersk tackle these challenges?
We focus on fully understanding our customers’ industries. By staying informed about the specific needs of each sector, Maersk can develop customised strategies that anticipate and overcome potential issues. Collaboration is key. The more we collaborate with our customers, the more we can build synergies that lead to mutual success.
Navigating geopolitical and economic shifts
Geopolitical changes have a significant impact on project logistics in Latin America. The volatility of political shifts can have wide-ranging effects as a result of fluctuating investments and delays in infrastructure development. However, Maersk stays agile by building strong relationships with governments and institutions to stay ahead of potential disruptions.
Roberto highlights that the region is poised for growth in infrastructure and energy development in the coming years. Maersk is preparing by investing in technology, safety measures, and staff training.
"We're investing in new technologies to streamline operations and improving safety protocols to protect our teams and equipment," he shares. This proactive approach keeps Maersk at the forefront of project logistics, ready to serve the evolving market.
Meeting customer expectations
Trust is paramount in project logistics. Roberto points out that customers rely heavily on Maersk to complete their projects seamlessly, within budget, and without unforeseen delays.
"Customers expect real-time support and visibility, and they need to feel confident that their project is being managed efficiently from start to end."
To meet these expectations, Maersk provides continuous updates and maintains transparency, ensuring the customers are always informed and reassured throughout the entire process. This approach helps mitigate the impact of any volatility that may arise during project execution.
Competitive edge: What sets Maersk apart
When asked about Maersk's competitive advantage in project logistics, Roberto highlights the company's extensive global presence and integration. "We utilise all of Maersk’s resources and worldwide expertise to provide seamless, multimodal end-to-end solutions," he says. With a workforce of over 100,000 people in 130 countries, Maersk's extensive network enables the company to combine global expertise with local insights, delivering unique solutions tailored to each customer's needs.
The role of technology and local partnerships
Technology is revolutionising logistics, and Latin America is embracing this shift. "There's a strong willingness to adopt new technologies here," Roberto explains. Maersk has already integrated advanced simulation and design tools to present clients with various scenarios, ensuring the most efficient and cost-effective solutions are selected. By 2025, Maersk intends to introduce even more sophisticated systems to further optimise logistics processes.
Equally important are local partnerships. These collaborations give Maersk valuable insights into customer needs and future projects.
"We heavily invest in building local partnerships because they are essential for staying connected and informed," Roberto emphasises. This robust local presence ensures Maersk is always ahead, ready to meet market demands.
Looking to the future
As Latin America continues to develop, Roberto predicts that technological and infrastructural advancements will be key in shaping the logistics landscape. Although the future holds uncertainties due to population growth and governmental changes, Maersk is already preparing for what’s to come. "We are investing in human capital, innovation, and technology to remain at the industry's forefront amid any volatility that may arise," Roberto concludes.
With Maersk leading the way in project logistics, the future looks promising for businesses across Latin America looking for reliable, innovative, and industry-driven comprehensive solutions.
