Green fuels – powering decarbonisation initiatives

Maersk defines “green fuels” as fuels with low to very low GHG emissions over their life cycle as compared to fossil fuels. Different green fuels achieve different life cycle GHG reductions depending on their production pathway as shown below.

Percentage life cycle GHG reductions compared to fossil fuels

  • Low emissions: 65-80%
  • Very low emissions: 80-95%

Maersk currently uses FAME biofuels to reduce GHG emissions in their ocean journey. With fuels like methanol Maersk will strive to achieve higher GHG emissions reductions than the legislative thresholds, in the future.

Sharing one network and one planet - how it works

Maersk ECO Delivery Ocean is based on a Mass Balance chain of custody model (CoC), that uses green fuels, such as biofuel or methanol. The emission reductions are gained on any of the lanes within the Maersk overall network, covering the agreed distance for your booking. Learn more about Mass Balance and ECO Delivery in the FAQ section.

On September 2023, Maersk was proud to set the world’s first methanol-powered container vessel on its maiden voyage. With 25 next generation green methanol-powered vessels, Maersk is adding even more green fuel to the network for Maersk ECO Delivery customers to access, while de-risking green fuel supply through diversification, and strengthening our customers’ capabilities in their decarbonisation ambitions.
