The opportunity
The Canada Trade Compliance Specialist will be responsible for ensuring Maersk’s adherence to Canadian import and export regulations, with a focus on classification, post-entry compliance and trade programs. The role includes HS classification, managing customs declarations, and maintaining compliance with trade agreements and regulatory requirements. The specialist will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to manage customs rulings, trade-related documentation, and ensure compliance with Canadian customs and global trade policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide guidance on tariff classification, HS codes, and preferential origin claims, ensuring compliance with rules of origin and duty programs.
- Manage the process for amending customs declarations, filing corrections (B2 adjustments), and handling post-entry issues such as voluntary disclosures.
- Stay up-to-date with Canadian customs regulations, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and relevant global trade agreements.
- On site client support when required
- Work closely with Maersk’s internal teams to address customs rulings, penalty mitigation strategies, and manage compliance risks.
- Oversee the maintenance of compliance documentation, including certificates of origin, customs rulings, and duty drawback records.
- Support the implementation of internal trade compliance policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with Maersk’s global trade compliance framework.
- Liaise with clients to provide trade compliance guidance, including duty savings opportunities and the use of FTAs.
- Assist with managing relationships with government authorities such as the CBSA, Foreign Trade Zone Programs, and other trade-related organizations.
We are looking for
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in HS classification
- Strong understanding of GIRS and Explanatory notes
- Application of SIMA, Surtax, EXCISE DUTY and TAX
- Knowledge of Canadian customs and trade regulations, including FTA’s and duty relief programs.
- Familiarity with post-entry procedures, such as adjustments, voluntary disclosures, and audit processes.
- Experience with trade compliance software and customs declaration systems (e.g., CargoWiseOne is a benefit)
- Proficiency in Microsoft suite products
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail, especially in tariff classification and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal teams, clients, and regulatory bodies.
- CCS certification will be considered an asset.

Pay Range: $67,000-$75,000*
*The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for the position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws.
