PURPOSE:

The Assistant Manager of Optimization is responsible for forecasting and allocating resources with the objective of maintaining a safe work environment, maximizing marine, yard, gate and rail productivity, controlling costs and meeting terminal and operational requirements. Also responsible for continuously improving the processes actioned and services provided to all internal and external customers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for the development and execution of operational strategy throughout the terminal facility.
  • Expected to use your independent judgment and discretion in making important operational decisions.  i.e.: shift an operating unit from task to task such as flip line to break bulk, move Transtainers from delivering imports to grounding exports, shift an operating vessel gang from one vessel to another, shift an operating rail unit from discharge to load back and assign or reassign gate clerks between functions.  Your decisions should be guided by business needs with the goal of improving overall terminal operations by maximizing labor efficiency and minimizing terminal turn-time.
  • Identify and execute real-time preventative measures as operational overlaps arise throughout assigned shift and department.
  • Responsible for communicating daily work assignments and equipment forecasts in accordance with the operational strategy.  
  • Analyze terminal equipment and critical operational needs and communicate them to the onsite Operations managers in order to maximize terminal yard space, secure required chassis and improve vessel productivity.
  • Become familiar with, utilize and comply with the applicable labor agreements and grievance adjudication processes.
  • Maintain appropriate professional working relationships with customers, steamship lines, vendors, the trucking community, terminal departments and the workforce.
  • Lead by example, adapt to changing circumstances, communicate effectively, build strong teams, make sound decisions, resolve problems and develop rapport with stakeholders.

CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Necessary to perform the requirements of the position:

  • Education - Prefer Bachelor degree in related field or Associate degree.  Three (3) years transportation/stevedoring experience or equivalent military experience.
  • Leadership – Strong managerial, supervisory, team-building, motivating and decision-making skills in order to effectively influence stakeholders on a daily basis to achieve operation goals.  Is receptive to innovative ideas and suggestions.  Thinks strategically and has long term vision.
  • Accountability – Achieve short term operational targets by maintaining standards that lead to high performance and execution
  • Agility – Ability to modify important changes rapidly
  • Collaboration – Ability to work together across boundaries and exchange as well as adapt skills
  • Functional Excellence – Broad knowledge in job area or discipline or expertise in specific discipline
  • Flexibility – Ability to adapt to Marine terminal Schedulin
